A Note from Artistic Director, Peter Moore

You are an absolutely vital member of the Steep community, and I hope you’ll join me for a moment of reflection about what makes our community so unique and so very important. I've always felt that Steep's strength lies in two areas: our collective ability to find the heart and hope in even the most challenging stories, and our capacity to create a warm, welcoming home in which to share and process these stories.

Even in our earliest days, when we were just discovering who we were as a company, our audiences could always rely on having an experience that fostered empathy and community. In a year in which compassionate, considered discourse seems to have abandoned us, this experience feels more important than ever, and as we bring our sixteenth season to life, our purpose has never been clearer.

Just as you play a crucial role at Steep, our theatre plays a crucial role in our community. By any measure, 2016 was a remarkable year for Steep. Each of our productions – Posh, The Few, Wastwater, and Bobbie Clearly – drew capacity crowds and critical acclaim. But more importantly, they challenged and engaged our artists and our audiences in essential conversations about our world today, and they welcomed new voices, both on stage and off, into our community. Now more than ever, we need cultural hubs like Steep, where people's stories are told with openness and empathy, where issues that affect our lives are discussed with respect and kindness, and where we can shake off a bit of solitude and find that connection with others that we seem to be so sorely lacking.

There is a magical feeling around our theatre and I’m grateful that you are a part of it. We are excited and energized for the important work ahead of us, and we will be working harder than ever to be a leader and a catalyst for good work throughout the community. New collaborations are on the horizon, and plans to expand our programming and physical presence in the community are in the works – expect news on that soon! And, of course, our productions will continue to be as bold and provocative as ever, featuring some of the most exciting theatre artists in Chicago.

I hope you will consider making a gift to Steep today. Your tax-deductible donation will make a world of difference for our theatre company and for our community. With your help, we can continue to make great art while creating a home for discourse, empathy, and connection.
